This is a photograph of Mavericks south of San Francisco in California, breaking during a late December swell. We were out on a boat for several days sitting off of Pillar Point photographing surfers for a New York Times magazine piece and at one point the texture, wave and light all lined up to create this spectacular look at the heavy water giant.
